The ATA Carnet (Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission) is an international customs
document which allows an individual / business to temporarily export or import goods for
commercial purposes to and from a country without having to pay duty or taxes on the goods that will be re-exported.
Main benefits of the ATA Carnet:
- Eliminate duties and taxes on goods that will be re-exported;
- Facilitate customs procedures allowing to use a single document for all customs transactions;
- Facilitate re-entry into a country by providing proof to customs that the goods originated from that country;
- Can be used several times in multiples countries during its period of validity if the same items are shipped.
ATA Carnet may not be used in all counties and for all goods. Every country has its own demands and restrictions for permanent and temporary entrance of goods. For instance, some countries have very long clearance examination for dry goods or wooden accessories. There are lots of traps and pitfalls in such shipments.
